Established in 1945 as Tata Engineering and Locomotive Co. Ltd. (TELCO), the company began with commercial vehicles before venturing into the passenger car segment. One of its most significant moments was in 1998 when Tata introduced the Indica, the first fully indigenous Indian passenger car. However, the Indica did not fare well in the market at first, and it was a turning point in 1999 when Tata Motors was contemplating selling its car division. Ratan Tata, the former Chairman of Tata Sons, met in Detroit with Ford to speak about a potential sale. But at the meeting, Ford's then-chairman Bill Ford apparently embarrassed Tata by saying that they "knew nothing about cars" and "shouldn't have ventured into the automotive space."

This hurtful comment made a lasting impression on Ratan Tata, who decided to pull out of the deal and instead worked on transforming Tata Motors into a market leader in the world auto industry. In a twist of fate, less than ten years later, Tata Motors purchased Ford's luxury divisions, Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR), in 2008, reversing one of the largest brands in the auto business.
